Established
in 1928, the Cave de Bissey is one of Burgundy's very first winegrower-run
wineries. Doctor Ozanon, its founder, foresaw the development
of winery cooperatives. This approach offered several distinct
advantages to local winegrowers who decided to band together:
improved winegrowing, winemaking and marketing techniques.
In the 70-plus years since, the
Cave de Bissey has conserved its original personal-scale set-up:
a friendly, almost family-like atmosphere capable of rallying
member winegrowers around a single common objective:
Producing
high-quality and individualized wines that honor the local winegrowing
areas.
Set in the heart
of the Côte Chalonnaise country, between the Côte
de Beaune to the north and Mâconnais to the south, Bissey-sous-Cruchaud
is a small town devoted almost exclusively to the production of
quality wines.
The
Cave de Bissey is located 18 km from Chalon-sur-Saône
within easy access to France's major highway network (the
A6 north-south motorway); the vineyards blossom all around
the village on a number of well-exposed hillsides.
Over
a land area of 100 ha, the following varietals are grown:
Aligoté Chardonnay...
for the whites
and…
Gamay Pinot
noir... for
the reds.
The
soils are composed of sand and clayey limestone.
Each appellation
produced provides the Cave de Bissey with a diversified range
of choice wines. From the freshness of an Aligoté to
the finesse and harmony of a Montagny… from a light
fruity red like the Bourgogne Passetoutgrain to the smoothness
and gentleness of the Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise selections,
or to the body and build of a Mercurey, not to overlook the
delicateness and elegance of our highly-reputed "Crémant"
sparkling wines. The focus lies in pleasure and discovery
when seeking to win over Burgundy wine lovers and satisfy
the most demanding of palates.
